Knowledge Mile

Return to home

The location of Design & The City was the Knowledge Mile: an area in the heart of Amsterdam which runs from the Amstelplein to the Nieuwmarkt. A coalition of universities of applied sciences, citizens, municipality, organisations and companies has formed an applied research ecosystem to develop, test and display smart solutions for metropolitan challenges in the area.

The Knowledge Mile is an initiative of the Amsterdam Creative Industries Network. Coalition partners (among others) of the Knowledge Mile are: Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Bell Labs, Rabobank, KPN, NS, We the City, Waag Society, Amsterdam School of the Arts and Inholland University of Applied Sciences.

Traveling in the city?

By train:

You can plan your trip (for example Schiphol Airport – Amsterdam Central Station) at the Dutch Railways website at ns.nl (just the train network), or at 9292.nl (all public transport). Making a reservation is not necessary.

Prices (when you use a public transport smartcard/ ov-chipkaart):

Train tickets

In the Netherlands only once:

  • You can by a train ticket at the ticket (vending) machines at the station or at the NS helpdesk (this will cost a couple of cents extra). The ticket machines only take coins or cards – no paper money.
  • Buying a ticket will cost add € 1.00 to the normal ticket price.
  • Make sure to check in (at the check in poles or portals) with these paper tickets! (They are provided with a chip and can be thrown away afterwards.)

By metro:

Plan your trip at 9292.nl

Metro tickets:

  • For the metro in Amsterdam you can buy a ticket at the ticket machines at the metro station.
  • For unlimited traveling in Amsterdam you can buy a Amsterdam Travel Ticket

Visiting the Netherlands regularly:

In the Netherlands we no longer use paper train tickets but a public transport smartcard or the ov-chipkaart. If you intent to visit the Netherlands more often we advise you to buy a smartcard. This will cost once € 7.50 and will expire after 5 years. In order to check in with NS you have to have minimum amount of € 10.00 at your ov-chipkaart. You can use this card for all public transport in the Netherlands.
